This repository provides a minimal example of a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server and client implementation using Node.js.

MCP Server

Minimal example Node.js implementation of an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server and client. This repository contains small, focused example scripts to help you experiment with a lightweight MCP-style messaging flow between a server and a client.

Contents

  • mcp.server.js: Example server implementation (Node.js).
  • mcp.client.js: Example client that communicates with the server.
  • package.json: Project manifest for dependency and script definitions.

Requirements

  • Node: v16+ recommended.
  • Package manager: pnpm or npm (optional).

Install Run one of the following in the repository root:

pnpm install
# or
npm install

Run

  • Start the server:
node mcp.server.js
  • Start the client (in a separate terminal):
node mcp.client.js

If the repository provides NPM scripts in package.json, you can also use pnpm run <script> or npm run <script>.

Usage

  • These are example scripts intended as a starting point. Run the server, then run the client to observe a simple exchange.
  • Inspect mcp.server.js and mcp.client.js to learn how messages are framed and handled.

Development

  • Edit the example files to modify message formats, add authentication, or connect to real model backends.
  • Add tests or example scenarios to validate protocol behaviors.

Contributing

  • Feel free to open issues or pull requests with improvements, bug fixes, or additional examples (e.g., WebSocket transport, TLS support, or integration with a model runner).

License

  • No license specified. Add a LICENSE file if you want to set terms for reuse.

If you'd like, I can:

  • add example environment variables and configuration handling,
  • add a small script in package.json for start/dev, or
  • create automated tests that exercise the example exchange.
