I-35W maintains a northbound direction in Burnsville with two lanes, adding a third lane at Burnsville Parkway. It crosses the Minnesota River into Bloomington, where it has a cloverleaf interchange with I-494. I-35W continues into Minneapolis, where it swerves slightly northeast to avoid the Washburn-Fair Oaks Mansion District. It has connections to I-94 and US 52, allowing for traffic exchanges. I-35W completes its loop around downtown and crosses the Mississippi River on the St. Anthony Falls Bridge. Notably, the I-35W Mississippi River bridge collapsed on August 1, 2007, resulting in significant casualties. The replacement bridge was completed and opened to traffic on September 18, 2008.
